ROY GOLDBERG
Roy Goldberg Shihan is one of the highest ranked Daito Ryu practitioners outside of Japan and the Chief Instructor of Daito Ryu Aiki Jujutsu Kiyamakai.
For over four decades, he has trained under Kiyama Hayawo Shihan, the Chief Instructor for the Kodokai branch of Daito Ryu in North America, and is Kiyama Shihan's senior student.
The Kodokai Menkyo Kaiden, Inoue Yusuke awarded Goldberg Sensei the rank of 7th dan, the official Kyoju Dairi teaching license, and the Hi Ogi no Koto, the 3rd scroll in the Kodokai tradition.
In 2017, Goldberg Shihan separated from Kodokai in Japan to form the Kiyamakai, an independent Daito Ryu organization, but maintains a close relationship with his longtime teacher Kiyama Shihan, who has recognized Roy Goldberg as the Shihan of Kiyamakai. He supervises Study Groups throughout the US and in Tokyo, traveling regularly to teach in seminars all over the world. He has been featured in Aikido Journal and Hiden Magazine in Japan.
Before becoming Kiyama Shihan’s student, Goldberg Shihan trained in Miyama Ryu Jujutsu for thirteen years under its originator Shinan Antonio Pereira in the legendary Tremont Dojo in the Bronx, New York. Miyama Ryu is an eclectic combat oriented system based on Takenouchi and Sosuishitsu Ryu Jujutsu, Judo and Aikido.
Goldberg Sensei also studied Aikido at the United States Federation Headquarters under the direction of Yamada Shihan and his senior students such as Harvey Konigsberg. Goldberg Shihan has been fortunate to work with and touch many of the leading Kodokai Shihan as well as several key Aikido instructors including Kisaburo Osawa, head instructor of the Aikikai in Japan, Gozo Shioda founder of Yoshinkan Aikido, Morihiro Saito of the Iwama Dojo, Kisshomaru Ueshiba Doshu as well as other direct students of O-Sensei.
To this day, he continues to train under his instructor Kiyama Shihan and he believes that, “in the martial arts, one teaches only to continue his own unfinished study.” Goldberg Shihan's goal is to preserve, protect and transmit Daito Ryu, the beautiful art and National Treasure of Japan, and to pass it on to serious students, just as his teacher, Kiyama Shihan shared it with him.
"You have already walked through the door and there is no coming back, just Shugyo."—Kiyama Hayawo Shihan
